I.COURSE DESCRIPTION

Theoretical and practical subject, focused on the presentation and use of rhetorical strategies commonly used in academic contexts that aim to achieve effective and persuasive communication in English. These strategies will be applied through oral and written production at the CEFR B1+/B2 levels. The appropriate development of persuasive communication will allow students to actively participate within the academic community, performance that will be evidenced through the effective production and interaction via oral and written discourse, which will correspond to their disciplinary areas.


II.LEARNING OUTCOMES

General

1.Apply the most common rhetorical strategies and resources in oral and written discourse effectively, which may belong to different academic contexts.


Specific

1.Examine the characteristics and elements of the academic written and oral texts in English, according to the needs of a particular audience in a given field of study.

2.Produce coherent and structured oral and written texts according to different discourse genres in English.

3.Assess the relevance and effectiveness of the use of rhetorical strategies in oral and written academic discourse.

4.Use syntax and semantics appropriately in an academic context.


III.CONTENTS

1.The academic text
1.1.Discursive purposes and genres.
1.2.Characteristics of informative, argumentative, narrative, and persuasive texts.
1.3.Use of persuasive strategies in written, oral, and multimodal texts.

2.Practice and development of communicative language skills (i.e., oral and written communication)
2.1.Techniques for the production of persuasive oral and written texts in an academic context.
2.2.Discourse markers relevant for oral and written production.
2.3.Communication of oral and/or written arguments based on academic evidence.

3.Linguistic aspects of English for academic and persuasive purposes
3.1.Syntax: Review and practice of discourse grammar (e.g.,text structure, cohesion, and coherence).
3.2.Semantics: Effective use of discourse markers to connect and relate ideas; indirect, figurative, analogical, and metaphorical language; evaluative language (e.g.,mitigators and intensifiers); academic register; and language mechanics (e.g., punctuation, spelling, and capitalization).
3.3.Phonology: Practice of English sounds (i.e.,contrastive phonetics).


IV.METHODOLOGICAL STRATEGIES

-Argumentative text writing (based on videos, news, and/or relevant topics in students? disciplines).

-Peer review.

-Debates.

-Role plays.
