I.COURSE DESCRIPTION

Theoretical and practical course, framed within the development of the four English language skills in an international academic context. Its linguistic level corresponds to CEFR B1+/B2. This class incorporates the presentation and analysis of cultural and academic aspects that are distinctive of English-speaking countries. Likewise, it assesses language production in academic tasks, which aims at demonstrating linguistic control over oral and written texts in the students? disciplinary areas.


II.LEARNING OUTCOMES

General

1.Demonstrate proficiency in the four English language skills as a foreign language in an comprehensive manner for the effective delivery of academic activities.


Specific

1.Discriminate general and specific information stemmed from oral and written texts in an academic and disciplinary context.

2.Infer oral and written assumptions from academic discourse.

3.Produce coherent oral and written texts, which are structured according to different discursive genres.

4.Argue ideas related to different academic disciplines, with a high level of independence, in an oral and written manner.

5.Use syntax and semantics appropriately in an academic context.


III.CONTENTS

1.Practice and development of receptive language skills (i.e., reading and listening comprehension)
1.1.Identification of discursive genres and elements of oral and written texts (e.g., topic, purpose, organization, and audience).
1.2.Comprehension and discrimination techniques applied in contexts where general and specific information is presented.
1.3.Inference of content related to oral and/or written input presented.

2.Practice and development of productive language skills (i.e., oral and written communication)
2.1.Techniques for the production of oral and written texts in an academic context.
2.2.Discourse markers relevant for oral and written communication.
2.3.Communication of oral and/or written arguments based on academic evidence.

3.English linguistic aspects for academic purposes
3.1.Syntax: Review and practice of compound sentences, relative and conditional clauses, complex grammatical structures, and modal verbs.
3.2.Semantics: Effective use of indirect and reported speech, linking words, prepositions, and language mechanics (e.g., punctuation, spelling, and capitalization).
3.3.Phonology: Practice of English sounds (i.e.,contrastive phonetics).


IV.METHODOLOGICAL STRATEGIES

-Peer review.

-Interaction with guest speakers.

-Students? presentations.

-Debates.

-Role plays.

-Written and oral communication (based on videos, news, and/or relevant topics in students? disciplines).
