II. DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this course is to explore basic theories of linguistics and their application to classroom practice, emphasizing how the knowledge of the way languages work will directly benefit the teaching of English Language Learners. The course provides an overview of linguistic, sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic analyses that inform decisions in the classroom in the areas of language acquisition, language comprehension and production and language planning among others.


III. OBJECTIVES

1. To demonstrate understanding of the value of linguistic knowledge when applied to the study of language
and communication.
2. To explain the role of Applied Linguistics to communication and communicative competence.
3. To analyze the relationship between the study of language and its applications to education and classroom practices.
4. To explain the connection between language knowledge and teaching English in the 21st century for its application in the classroom.


IV. COMPETENCES

1. The student makes pedagogical decisions considering biological, psychological and sociocultural characteristics of primary and secondary school students and how they learn and develop in order to promote inclusive learning (Toma decisiones pedagogicas que consideran las caracteristicas biologicas, psicologicas, socioculturales de los estudiantes de Educacion Basica y Media y como estos aprenden y se desarrollan para favorecer el aprendizaje de manera inclusiva | Subcompetencias 4.1, 4.2 Perfil de egreso Pedagogia en Ingles para Educacion Basica y Media).
2. The student understands the structure and functioning of the English Language and its cultural expressions, in order to contextualize the developmental process of English communicative skills in the school context (Comprende la estructura y funcionamiento de la lengua inglesa y manifestaciones culturales asociadas, para contextualizar el proceso de desarrollo de habilidades comunicativas en ingles en el contexto escolar. 3. The student masters the English Language at an Advanced Level and is able to communicate fluently and precisely in order to offer provide learning opportunities for the integrated development of communicative skills in English (Domina la lengua inglesa a nivel avanzado y se comunica de forma precisa y fluida, para ofrecer oportunidades de aprendizaje orientadas al desarrollo integrado de las habilidades comunicativas en ingles | Subcompetencias 1.4, 1.5 Perfil de egreso Pedagogia en Ingles para Educacion Basica y Media).
