I. DESCRIPTION

Intercultural Communication" has been designed to assist the students to meet the challenges of living in a
world in which, more and more, they will be asked to interact with people from other cultures and who may
not be like them in many ways. Its primary objectives are to help them become more attuned to intercultural
communication differences, and to provide them with the knowledge and skills that will help them interact
successfully with people from different cultures.


II. OBJECTIVES

General:
1. To understand the role of communication in culture by looking at the fundamental connection between
them from different perspectives.
2. To develop ways of thinking about and identifying cultural variables that appear through
communication.
3. To learn about barriers to intercultural communication, adjustment to other cultures, and culture shock.
4. To analyze and interpret certain literary works within the context of specific historical periods of
chosen cultures.
5. To broaden the students' cultural horizons so that they respect other nations' traditions and customs.

Specific:
1. To analyze and understand the cultures with which the students will have contact.
2. To understand how differences in intercultural communication manifest themselves in different
settings.
3. To analyze essays, poems, and short stories that refer to specific cultural problems in intercultural
communication.
4. To become acquainted with the norms, rituals, and taboos of other cultures through a series of case
studies.

IV. METHODOLOGY

The course will be conducted as a seminar/workshop: that is, it will be highly interactive with most course
time devoted to discussion, exercises, and student-presented reports. Students will read materials, attend class,
complete assignments, and participate in class discussions.


V. EVALUATION

- Cultural self-assessment: 10%
- Book essay: 10%
- Research paper and presentation: 30%
- End of term in-class quiz: 30%
- Participation in the online discussion board, reading reports, reading checks, classwork: 20%
