I.DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO

Course corresponding to the fifth term of the bachelor program which general objective is approaching the students to the specific theoretical and practical elements of English phonetics and phonology: the vocoids of English and their allophonic variants; the contoids of English and their allophonic variants and the features of connected speech and their phonophonological manifestations in English. Special attention is paid to the oral performance so as to achieve a highly advanced level of proficient oral performance particularly in terms of those features of a prosodic sort that accompany the segmental features of the English language. The course entails phonemic transcription practice, oral production, and sound discrimination of the standard varieties of English.


II.RESULTADOS DE APRENDIZAJE

1.To describe how speech sounds are produced and classified discussing their phonological groupings and distributions in English.

2.To produce features of simplification as they have an effect on the production of English vocoids and contoids.

3.To develop reproduction skills in the use of English suprasegmental and prosodic patterns as they occur in connected speech.

4.To command in depth the behaviour of the stress, accent, rhythm and intonation subsystems as they manifest themselves in English.

5.To produce and reproduce spoken English in the chosen variety with a B2 or above level of proficiency.


III.CONTENIDOS

1.The linguistic sciences: Levels of linguistic analysis
1.1.Phonetics and its areas.
1.2.Language and speech.
1.3.The nature of phonology and phonetics.

2.The speech chain
2.1.The speaker, the medium, the hearer. How they relate to one another in the process of spoken communication.
2.2.The speech mechanism. The so-called organs of speech and their specific role in the production of English segments.
2.3.Consonantal elements in speech. English consonants ? their production, perceptual qualities, place and manner of articulation /Discussion of the phonemic status of some consonants.

3.The English speech sounds in general. Details of classification. Allophonic variants.
3.1.English vocoids: details of classification. Pure vowels and diphthongs. Inventory, frequency of occurrence. Strong and weak forms in vowels.
3.2.Allophonic variants. The RP vowels and diphthongs. The GA vowels and diphthongs.
3.3.The English contoids: Inventory. Details of description and classification: voicing, place and manner.

4.Features of simplification and their effect on the English vocoids.
4.1.Elision, assimilation.
4.2.Gradation, compression,
4.3.Linking

5.An act of oral communication in English
5.1.Segmental, prosodic and paralinguistic features involved
5.2.Stress, accent, rhythm and intonation: generalities.
5.3.Stress in English: stress in simple words, stress in compounds and collocations.
5.4.Accent and Rhythm in English: falling accent, rising accent, falling-rising accent

-Selected readings on specific matters and further analysis (Pair/Group) of said readings.
